GISÉLE – The Afrobeats Beauty Making Some Serious Waves!

Giséle is a London-based Afrobeats singer making her mark in music. Here the fun-loving singer talks with Mogul Magazine about her inspirations, producer Jae5, working through the pandemic and overcoming challenges.

What made you decide to pursue a career in entertainment?

I decided to pursue a career in entertainment because I’m genuinely passionate about making music. It’s what I enjoy doing & when I realised other people were even slightly interested in hearing my music, it just felt right.

How would you describe your music?

My music is a fusion of genres, predominantly Afro sounds. I also draw on my multilingualism by mixing French & other languages in my lyrics.

What is it like being a woman of colour in the UK music industry?

Being a woman of colour in any field comes with its challenges. That’s no different in music. However, I feel that the scene is gradually making way for us. Black women are amazing & the world is starting to realise that.

Which artist inspires you the most and why?

I don’t have one artist that inspires me the most because different artists inspire me for various reasons, e.g. Beyoncé’s undeniable work rate, Teyana Taylor being so talented & multi-faceted, Bree Runway’s energy & confidence, Bellah, Shaybo, Enny I could go on.

If you can work with one producer, who would it be and why?

I’d love to work with Jae5. His music never fails.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome since being a singer?

The biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome has been blocking outside noise from getting in the way of my music. I’ve had to learn to take ownership of my art form & stay true to myself.

Has the pandemic affected your career in any way?

I’d say in terms of music, the pandemic worked in my favour. I was able to focus on my craft. I had time on my hands which I  put into writing & studio time. I also released my debut single during the lockdown, which did really well.

Can you share what has contributed to your success?

I bring something different with my music. It’s a fresh sound that isn’t so prominent in the UK. My melodies, lyrics, perspective & beat choices are all organic and unique to me. This has contributed to my success thus far.

What is the best advice you’ve received as an artist?

The best advice I’ve received is to

channel my energy towards those here for me. If I have ten listeners, I’m making the best music for that 10. In a crowd of 100, if five people are engaged in my performance, then I’m giving those five people a brilliant show. The rest shouldn’t be my concern.

What can the fans expect next?

I’m looking to collaborate with different artists, both UK based & international, so that’s something to stay tuned for. I’m also working towards putting together a body of work.

What message do you have for the world?

My message to the world: make way for Gisèle. You won’t be disappointed!
