Trick or Treat, How does sugar (glucose) affect us?

Hello Mogul ladies! Happy Halloween

This month with Halloween approaching, Trick or Treat, How does sugar (glucose) affect us?

Halle Berry Actress has Type 1 and was diagnosed at 22.
If they are unconscious give them an emergency insulin injection and call an ambulance.

THE SCIENCE BIT (Simplified)

Minority groups are affected more by diabetes due to genetics not allowing the pancreas to perform efficiently.

During our cycle we lose blood which contains oxygen, hence we get foggy brains or say the wrong words. We also lose nutrients including Glucose which is why we get cravings for sweet foods as our bodies want to replace what we lose through the cycle.

We as ladies, feel faint due to less blood in our bodies as we are in a form of shock, we become moody as losing other nutrients that our bodies need and feel unwell as our bodies go through this process.

GLUCOSE & IT’S IMPORTANCE

We need glucose along with other nutrients to get our cells working which in turn ensures our organs work. The heart, lung, kidneys, liver, etc..

These organs work together to filter blood and transport oxygen to the brain to maintain life.

We create glucose by insulin naturally being manufactured by the pancreas. We eat food which when mixed with insulin makes glucose and other nutrients depending on what we eat.

The cells open a bit like a locked door when everything is working well the nutrients and Glucose (insulin) are the key and can open the cell and it works.

TYPES of DIABETES

Type I DIABETES (Insulin-dependent Diabetes Mellitus) which is usually seen from childhood but can be later on in life, the pancreas can’t produce the insulin and therefore, Type I become insulin-dependent by needing to add the insulin to the body in the form of an injection.

How much? This is why it’s important to test blood throughout the day on more than one occasion as our levels may need to change throughout the day.

Type I is not reversible and if not dealt with properly ie missing the food, not taking the correct level of insulin it can lead to nerve damage, eyesight loss, limb amputation along with stroke and heart issues.

Type II DIABETES (Non-Insulin Diabetes Mellitus) is where the door to the cell sometimes works, ie sometimes insulin is produced by the pancreas and sometimes it’s not. Therefore, tablets and/or injections are needed.

Type II is reversible by a strict diet and can disappear. However, if Type II is not controlled then it can lead to Type I and become not reversible.

GESTATIONAL DIABETES

Happens during pregnancy and the mum May continue with diabetes once the baby is delivered or it may disappear.

TEENAGERS & DIABETES

This is a nightmare, I’m not going to lie, as Teenagers are going through puberty so their bodies are not controllable due to instability with their blood, they like to eat lots of food and sometimes they don’t. You also have alcohol being tested at times, you are asking them to test their blood so they rebel. All this is very hard to control.

LEVELS & HOW CAN YOU HELP

You can have a high level of sugar anything above a reading of 8 when the finger blood test is done or a low which is anything below 4.

A high blood sugar takes a few days and needs to be reversed at the Hospital with lots of fluids.

A low blood sugar takes minutes to happen and is dangerous if not sorted quickly if the person can open their mouth and talk give them orange juice and chocolate followed by carbohydrates ( sandwich) as it’s important to maintain the blood sugar not just give it an initial rise.
