She named herself Queen before the world knew who she was. That was the first mogul move.<\/span><\/p>\n

Born Dana Owens in Newark, New Jersey \u2014 a city that didn’t hand out crowns \u2014 she decided at eight years old that Latifah, meaning delicate and sensitive in Arabic, was who she was. Then she put Queen in front of it. Not as a boast. As a declaration.<\/p>\n

She was signed to Tommy Boy Records at eighteen. Her debut album All Hail the Queen<\/em> dropped in 1989. It sold over a million copies. It was one of the first female hip hop albums ever made. In a genre dominated by men, Queen Latifah stood up and said something different.<\/p>\n

Then her second album underperformed. The label dropped her.<\/p>\n

Most people stop there. She didn’t.<\/p>\n

She was working at Burger King. She took the money she had and invested it in a delicatessen and a video store on the ground floor of her apartment building. In 1991, at just twenty one years old, she founded Flavor Unit Records and Management Company in New Jersey. She became its CEO. While building her own career she was simultaneously managing Naughty by Nature \u2014 helping build other people build their own empires at the same time.<\/p>\n

Motown signed her next. She released Black Reign<\/em> in 1993 \u2014 the first gold album ever by a Black female rapper. The single U.N.I.T.Y won her a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. It was the first Grammy in that category ever won by a woman. The song confronted domestic violence and sexism with a directness the industry had never heard from a woman before. It wasn’t controversial. It was necessary.<\/p>\n

Then she did something nobody expected. She became an actress.<\/p>\n

Not a cameo. Not a reality show. A serious, Oscar-nominated actress. Her role as Matron Mama Morton in Chicago<\/em> in 2002 made her the first female rapper to receive an Academy Award nomination. Chicago<\/em> went on to win Best Picture.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

She lost the award to her co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones \u2014 but the nomination alone changed what the world thought was possible for a woman who had started in hip hop.<\/p>

The first rapper \u2014 male or female \u2014 to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The first rapper \u2014 male or female \u2014 to receive the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. Harvard University awarded her the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal for her contributions to Black history and culture. Not entertainment. History. And in 2023 her debut album All Hail the Queen<\/em> was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry \u2014 the earliest female rap recording ever to receive that honour. Not a shelf. The permanent record of American culture.<\/p>

Her net worth in 2026 is estimated at seventy million dollars. Built not on a single talent but on thirty years of ownership \u2014 of her music, her production company, her image, her story.<\/p>
