Joanne Rowling, Better known as J. K. Rowling, is a British\u00a0novelist,\u00a0philanthropist,\u00a0film producer,\u00a0television producer, and\u00a0screenwriter, best known for writing the\u00a0Harry Potter\u00a0fantasy series. The books have won multiple awards, and sold more than 500\u00a0million copies, becoming the\u00a0best-selling book series in history. They have also been the basis for\u00a0a film series, over which Rowling had overall approval on the scripts\u00a0and was a producer on the final films in the series.<\/p>\n

The British beauty was born in\u00a0Yate, Gloucestershire, England, Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for\u00a0Amnesty International\u00a0when she conceived the idea for the\u00a0Harry Potter\u00a0series while on a delayed train from\u00a0Manchester\u00a0to London in 1990. Rowling’s\u00a0first novel\u00a0in the series,\u00a0Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was published in 1997. There were six sequels, of which the last,\u00a0Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released in 2007. Since then, Rowling has written five books for adult readers:\u00a0The Casual Vacancy\u00a0(2012) and\u2014under the\u00a0pseudonym\u00a0Robert Galbraith\u2014the\u00a0crime fiction\u00a0novels\u00a0The Cuckoo’s Calling\u00a0(2013),\u00a0The Silkworm(2014),\u00a0Career of Evil\u00a0(2015), and\u00a0Lethal White\u00a0(2018).<\/p>\n

Rowling’s story is nothing short of a fairytale with the author going from “rags to riches\u201d. Rowlings progressed from living on government assisted benefits to being the world’s first billionaire author.\u00a0Today Rowlings is no longer a billionaire as she gave away much of her earnings to charity, but she still remains one of the wealthiest people in the world.<\/p>\n

To date, she is the United Kingdom’s bestselling living author, with sales in excess of \u00a3238M. The 2016\u00a0Sunday Times Rich List\u00a0estimated Rowling’s fortune at \u00a3600\u00a0million, ranking her as the joint 197th richest person in the UK. Time named her a runner-up for its 2007\u00a0Person of the Year, noting the social, moral, and\u00a0political inspiration\u00a0she has given\u00a0her fans. In October 2010, Rowling was named the “Most Influential Woman in Britain” by leading magazine editors.<\/p>\n
