Allegra’s ‘Unsent Love Letters Vol.1’: An Insight Into Her Most Honest Songs Yet
After the success of your latest single ‘Love You Right Back’ featuring ALOK, you’ve released your new single ‘Strangers’ and announced the release of your first EP, ‘Unsent Love Letters Vol.1’. How does it feel to be putting out an entire body of work?
Terrifying haha. I’ve been going back-and-forth back-and-forth for just over a year working on this EP, perfecting it. It’s the first time everyone will hear a body of work from me as an artist. I don’t want my fan saying ‘Strangers’ is just another song – I’ve thought about it, and it has a storyline. It’s not a space filler track. Each song has a meaning and a message and a story.
Describe the sound and vibe of ‘Strangers.’ How does it differ from your previous work, and what do you hope listeners will take away from it?
You can look at strangers in two ways… yes it’s a heartbreak track, but it’s also a revenge track. It says yes, I’m heartbroken, yes, I’m sad, but also I’m so much better and I deserve to be happy for myself. You’re telling your ex I wish we were strangers. If that doesn’t hurt them, I don’t know what will and I think that sets the energy for the rest of the EP.
You’ve been praised for seamlessly blending club and pop music in your tracks. How did you approach this fusion of genres in your upcoming EP?
I’ve loved every song I’ve done before my EP doing amazing work with amazing DJs around the world. I wanted to step away from that slightly with this EP – not saying that I don’t love a good remix !!! But I just wanted to to show a different side of myself.
What do you think sets your music apart from others in the pop scene?
I don’t just release tracks and songs just to release a song every lyric and every melody has been thought over so many times because I only released tracks that means something to me because if I don’t believe it how can I connect with my fans? How can I connect to others? I want to sing my songs and connect to it myself every time I sing it because I want everyone who listens to it to connect to it.
What are the lyrical themes in ‘Unsent Love Letters Vol.1?’
Each song is an unsent Love letter. When I was a 13 year old girl or whenever I was heartbroken, I would get my writing set out and write letters to the boys who broke my heart. I would never send them, but I would put them all in a drawer with their name and date that I wrote them. I think that was just a way of me getting my emotions out and just telling them how I felt. So with this EP, each song is an unsent love letter that I’ve written to an ex.
Can you share any memorable moments or challenges you encountered while working on ‘Strangers?’ How did you overcome them?
I was going through a really tough break up when I wrote strangers so there was a lot of mixed emotions that I had to channel. The amendments where I found it difficult to sing were because I just felt too much when I sang the song. But with time it’s became a strength to sing and now I just imagine that I sing it to my ex, and it’s the best feeling telling someone that you wish you never met them.
Can you describe the music video for ‘Strangers’ and how it captures the song’s meaning?
I wanted to film in a place that a lot of my fans could relate to and what better place to do that in then London! I want my fans to look at the vision and say I’ve been there. I’ve walked that street. I know exactly where Allegra filmed that because that’s what I want people to resonate with the song.
Looking ahead of the release of ‘Unsent Love Letters Vol.1,’ what are your goals and aspirations for the future of your music career? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you can tease for your fans?
Hopefully after releasing my first EP I can tell you there’s more to be released, I can’t say too much right now but after that, I hope to be doing live shows!
