Nathan O’Regan Makes A Soulful Debut With New EP ‘Uncovered Vol.1’
Belfast’s Nathan O’Regan has unveiled the anticipated release of his debut covers EP, titled ‘Uncovered Vol.1’. Featuring a carefully-picked selection of covers that sincerely honour Irish songwriting and his personal devotion to his homeland’s musical community, this introductory release is set to cement O’Regan’s deserving status as one-to-watch in the scene.
Released via Zenith Cafe, the EP kicks off with a soul-stirring rendition of O’Regan’s longtime friend and collaborator Gareth Dunlop’s track ‘It’ll Be Alright’. Instantly establishing a flair for recreating old-school soul in an uplifting, unique style, the heartwarming version sets a wonderful tone for the tracks that follow.
Combining trademark, distinctly soulful vocals with understated, motown-inspired instrumentals, each cover is recognisably his, thoughtfully interpreting lyrical messages. From the rich, upbeat take on Ciaran Lavery’s folk ballad ‘Follow You Down’ to the infectious version of powerhouse songwriter Fiona Harte’s ‘Permanent’, O’Regan merges a blend of genres and influences and achieves magical results.
The singles are preceded by the remaining unreleased tracks, which convey a more stripped-back tone and laidback energy, placing emphasis on O’Regan’s authentic, powerful vocal delivery. ‘Is That What You Wanted’ maintains a guitar-led groove that recalls the 60s and 70s, reimagining MCVEIGH’s heartfelt original. The EP comes to a beautiful close with Fiona O’Larke’s ‘Strange People’, consisting of a simple yet effective arrangement of organ and vocals.
With ‘Uncovered Vol.1’, Nathan O’Regan not only pays homage to Northern Irish music but establishes himself as a distinctive solo artist in his own right. Following his monthly ‘Songbook’ show in Belfast that provided a platform for the local music scene, the beginning of his new musical chapter is off to a remarkable start.
