In the dazzling light of Stacey Jackson, multi-talented doesn’t even begin to cover it. As we catch a glimpse into her bustling life, the singer, entrepreneur, TV presenter, and author graciously takes a moment to share her latest endeavours with Mogul Magazine.
Thank you so much for answering our questions today. How are you doing?
I am fine, thank you!
What does your day-to-day look like these days?
I am always juggling, life, kids, family, etc. But now that I have a new book, ‘How A Gangsta Rapper Made Me A Better Mom’, coming out, that is my primary focus! I’m also finishing up in the studio some of the soundtrack to the book because that is going to be integrated into the audiobook, coming out this summer. But first, the e-book and the paperback release, so it’s all go go go! I start rehearsals for a big tour to promote the release of my album, ‘Super Woman’. It will start in May, so I’ve got my hands full already!
You’re a woman of many talents, let’s break it down. How did you get your foot into the entertainment industry to begin with?
It all started when I was young, in Canada. I was singing, writing songs, and in a band by the time I was 15; it was an original rock band called Cold Front. Then I moved to New York and basically continued performing in bands while I was working. I got married, had kids, and took a big hiatus for about 15 years to raise my family. When I moved to London 24 years ago, I joined a band and met some cool people in the industry. I told them that I wanted to record an album, and that was my dream. I didn’t know how to get started, to be honest, so I aligned myself with a charity called Music for Youth, started casting some of the amazing talented kids who performed all across the country, and I had this idea of bringing them to London and decided to sprinkle about 30 or 40 of these kids throughout the record. One of the tracks off that album of Motown covers got remixed, and it ended up on the charts. There I was, sitting between Lady Gaga and the Scissor Sisters, and I suddenly got calls from producers in the dance music world saying, “You know your vocals suit the genre of music; would you like to write some dance music?” Obviously, as a songwriter, I never ventured into the dance music world, but I thought, well, here’s a door that opened. Let’s go in it! I started writing dance tracks, and that’s how it all started—I wouldn’t change it for the world! I’m so happy.
How did you branch out from hosting to starting up your singing career? What inspired you to start a whole new career?
My singing career came before I hosted my television show! I had a record out with Snoop Dogg back in 2011 and started hosting a television series a lot later! My passion and my love have always been with 1980s music, having grown up in that generation. I’ve been super influenced throughout my own career as a musician and songwriter by the sounds of the ‘80s, so I auditioned to host a show. When I got the call and went to audition, I didn’t think I was going to get it! One thing led to another, and they loved it, so I did three seasons of ‘Stacey Jackson in the 80s’! 54 episodes on TV of videos and songs about the 1980s.
I guess the hosting was just the transition from the singing. I was quite well-versed in ‘80s music, and having been a musician, it was a very easy transition for me.
What music do you listen to in your free time?
I listen to ‘80s music! I think I’m still stuck in that world, largely because I think I remember every single lyric! Don’t ask me where I put my car keys 5 minutes ago, but ask me about the words to the song from 1982, and I’m all over it!
We would love to hear more about your upcoming book!
My book is loosely based on my life, but it’s fictionalised. It’s a story based on a woman who’s juggling her family and, later in life, becomes a pop singer. Of course, she is trying to make a success out of her music career, and then this opportunity arises when she gets the chance to record with “The Most Famous Rapper in the World”. With a lot of other trials and tribulations and some tragedies along the way, her husband gets killed; she gets thrown into having to run his business… There’s a lot of comedy and a lot of drama. It’s a quick read, and I cannot believe that it’s out now! You can pre-order it as an e-book, and then the paperback comes out in a few weeks—so very, very exciting times!
Could you name some of your current fashion staples?
Oh my God! I am still a rock chick, I think! I have a closet full of leather jackets, and I love flared trousers or comfy sweats (I live in hoodies!). But my staple is a leather jacket. No matter what, even under a winter coat, I’m still in a leather jacket! That’s my fashion-stable rock chick! I think that’s always been me since the ‘80s; I don’t think I’ve changed!
What do you think are going to be some big trends in 2024, and what are you happy to leave behind in 2023?
I have to say the ‘80s are still very prominent! I just went shopping with my son, and he was looking for a pair of trousers with pleats. That’s so ‘80s, but he said it’s coming back! So even in men’s fashion, I think the ‘80s are still here. I saw a sweatshirt the other day with puffy sleeves! Oh, and people are still making a trend out of fitness clothes, but if you look at it, leggings are so ‘80s, and oversized sweaters too!
What do you have planned for this year?
Oh my God, what a year! My book is about to come out! I was just telling someone that it’s just the beginning of this journey. I am literally just on the sidewalk, but I’m heading towards the road! And the road’s going to go to the motorway, and then I’m heading to the airport! I think it’s going to be a big year for me, and I’m super excited! We’re going to be touring not just an album that’s coming out, but obviously my book. I’ll be able to integrate the music and the book, which will be very different considering it’s not going to be an average book tour. I will obviously do some signings, but I think for the most part, it will be performance! Look out for a bunch of tour dates across the UK! I’ll be travelling to the States and to Canada as well.
I’m super excited because this book has been part of my existence and is a long time coming!
