Hilary Roberts talks to Mogul about growing and creating these positive changes.
Hi Hilary, how are you doing today?
I am really good! Just super busy planning my wedding for September and promoting our new song, “Euphoria”!
How is your Summer going so far?
It’s going great we’ve had different events for the Red, Songbird, Foundation, working on wedding details, and working on music.
What would your younger self say about the woman you have become?
I am so grateful that you were able to heal, and that you’re happier than you ever thought you could be. I wish that I would have known as I wouldn’t perhaps have felt so hopeless for so long.
How did you discover your passion for singing and songwriting?
Both of my parents introduced different styles of music to me. I always loved great singers but, it was when I was introduced to the play. Annie and I started singing the songs at age 10 when I discovered I had a voice. I started writing music as a teenager, which helped me to relieve all of the feelings that I was going through.
Would you mind sharing some highs and lows of your journey so far?
When I was younger, I was an alcoholic and a drug addict, and I ruined four major wrecker deals because of it. And, eventually, I lost my voice for a time and didn’t know if I would get it back. After I stayed sober for a while, my voice eventually came back, but I was afraid I was too old and it was too late. I had people that for it and I finally did after Meeting Damon Sharpe in 2017. We then found success with a top 10 hit in 2018 and a number one in 2019! And it’s all been fabulous because I’m 26 years sober now I can really appreciate it.
What/who helped you the most in the process of getting sober?
They were people that loved me until I could love myself and would not give up on me. A woman named Angie T plucked me up out of the gutter and another woman by the name of Polly P helped me overcome staying in abusive relationships. And a whole lot of other amazing people that meet on a regular basis. It takes a village.
What was the best piece of advice you received during these times?
To tell on myself to others and lean on them. The word “we”, not me. And to not isolate, that if I wanted to freedom they had, I had to do what they had done to recover.
What keeps you inspired to help others and record music?
I have been given a life beyond my wildest dreams after living a life of hell and nightmares and trauma and pain. Today my life is the polar opposite of that. I have joy and peace and love and self-care and completely believe that I’m worthy of good things. I want to give back as much as I can and want people to realize that they can heal, and they can be free, even if they suffered for many years with the same horrific pain. I want them to know that is possible and it’s real.
Could you tell us more about your foundation Red Songbird? How did you set it up, what does it stand for, what is your mission?
When I was six years sober, I was still having nightmares from the traumas I grew up experiencing. I would relieve them every single night and wake up, screaming and crying. My spiritual advisor at the time directed me to go get help from a treatment facility in a foundation that paid for half of the care. I swear that one day if I had the money or the platform or both that I would help others in the same way that that place helped me and saved my life. The Red Songbird Foundation’s mission is to help people heal from the darkness of their past. We educate not only the afflicted ones, but the families and friends of the afflicted, with scholarship treatments, we get therapy for them, and we have fundraising events so that we can continue to help people heal from the pain that they’re suffering from.
Via the Red Songbird Foundation, you are extending a helping hand. Could you share any memorable encounters?
A woman lost custody of her child. After we helped her go through treatment and aftercare, she was able to go back to school, get a job, and get her child back. Another situation is where a mother wrote to is about her son, who is on death’s doorstep not being able to stop using and drinking. We got him the help he needed, he is sober, has a career and gives back.
Another woman who had a horrific PTSD, could not be intimate with her husband, because it frightened her and made her remember awful things. We got her help, and today she’s able to experience love and intimacy without the nightmares of trauma. It’s just beautiful to watch people gain a life that they’ve never known.
What part of your life is your current single ‘Euphoria’ touching upon? What inspired it?
What’s on the agenda for the rest of the year?
I felt so old at 16 because of what it happened to me growing up. Today I experience that youthful joy and laughter, that it feels like I’m almost a kid inside again. Euphoria is about experiencing that kid-like state like when you sledge down a hill and you laugh laugh laugh or when you play with a puppy and you laugh or you swing on the swings and you giggle. That kind of joy is being able to live in the moment And just be happy. An experience of YAY!
I’m getting married in September and we are also releasing a very sexy R&B-style song on the day of my wedding. For me, I believe that intimacy was always supposed to be beautiful with the man I love. All of the other abuses that happened and all of the behaviours that stemmed from that were cut to my soul. Now I get to experience the most beautiful intimacy with the love of my life. It doesn’t get any better than that.
